Headline : Celebrating 50 Years of Batman in Film
Caption : Friday (30Jul16) marks 50 years since DC Comics iconic superhero Batman first appeared on the big screen. Since Adam West’s madcap version of the character moved from TV to film in 1966, Batman has gone through a number of incarnations and actors, with each star who has donned the famous cape and cowl bringing something new to the role. After West became the first actor to play Batman on film, it was more than 20 years until the character got another big screen outing, with Michael Keaton taking on the role opposite Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Tim Burton’s 1989 blockbuster. Keaton kept hold of the cape in 1991’s Batman Returns, before Val Kilmer and George Clooney answered the call of the Bat signal with less success.

For many younger fans however the definitive Batman is Christian Bale, who portrayed the Dark Knight in Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed trilogy between 2005 and 2012. Finally, the past few years have seen two very different interpretations of Batman, with Ben Affleck playing him as a brooding veteran in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Will Arnett voicing a Lego incarnation in 2014’s The Lego Movie. Arnett’s Lego Batman will get his own standalone film next year (17).
